Surf school. The instructors.
Founded in 1988 as the first school of its kind in Bizkaia, it is located on Arrietara-Atxabiribil beach in the municipality of Sopelana. Over the course of these years, the school has catered for over 4,000 people.
Its founder, Gorka Yarritu was born in 1969 and has been surfing since the age of 13. He was Champion of Bizkaia in 1990, Champion of the Basque Country in 92-93 and Runner-up in 93-94. He has spent 10 years in Europe's Top-10 and has taken part in world championship events, being one of the pioneers of international competition. He combines his management of the school with his job as team-manager for the Quiksilver team, as well as scouting for the surfers of the future.
In addition to his trainer's licence, he holds a lifeguard's certificate.
Lurta Nikolas, the promoter and founder of Barrika Surf Kanp was born in 1969 and has been surfing since he was 13. He describes himself as a laid back surfer and traveller. He worked as a lifeguard on La Salvaje beach (Solondota - Barinatxe) during the summers of 92-93-94-95-96 and 97 and was a founder of Hegohaizea Films, a TV production company that pursues a wide range of projects involving surfing.
During this stage, he was one of the pioneers in filming water footage of great beauty.
He produced and hosted a series of programmes for the AXN channel called SURFARI and he currently combines his job as a cameraman for Basque TV, ETB, with surfing classes.
In addition to his trainer's licence, he holds a lifeguard's certificate.
They have both shared stints as internet commentators in Spanish during the WCT QUIKSILVER PRO-FRANCE world championship event.

Surfari Service:
A monitor from the school, who is also a qualified lifeguard, and a sports trainer organise outings to find the best waves and conditions to suit each guest.
